Network bridge from Windows 8 wifi to Ubuntu LAN

Network bridge from Windows 8 wifi to Ubuntu LAN

I have a laptop running Windows 8 which is connected to my network through wifi. My desktop is too far away to reach my router, so connecting directly to it is impossible. My desktop dual-boots Windows 7 and Ubuntu. I set up a network bridge on my laptop and connected it to the desktop via an ethernet cable. The connection works properly when I boot my desktop into windows, but when I boot into Ubuntu, the desktop either is stuck saying 'connecting' or it may say 'connected' but in neither situation does the internet work. I've tried automatic DHCP, automatic (addresses), manual, etc. and even tried ignoring IPV 6, but nothing seems to work. Can anyone help?
Edit: I attempted the suggestions made by guntbert to no avail. Any ping command from Ubuntu simply leaves me with a "Network is unreachable". I don't change any settings and windows 7 recognizes the connection just fine.
